Men Return To Work

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 26. The 127 labourers employed by Fletcher Holdings have decided to terminate their wage dispute with the company in the meantime, the secretary of the Auckland Labourers' Union (Mr H Kay) said today. They will return to work at 7.30 a.m. on Monday. During the last two days they had held a marathon stop-work meeting to discuss their attitude following the refusal by Fletchers of wage claims of 7s 4d ah hour. Union representative have been instructed to carry out. further wage negotiations at an appropriate time and also to ask other unions with members working for Fletchers to make a joint approach to the company for pay increases for all. Mr Kay said the men had decided on a return to work before a telegram from the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) warning them the "Government will not stand idly by and see the law of the land brought into contempt.” was received.

In a telegram to Mr Kay. Mr Shand said: “I have been informed of the action taken by your union which has resulted in the present stoppage of work by all labourers employed or jobs being undertaken in Auckland by Fletchers. Ltd., and of the action taken tc spread the dispute by involving certain drivers. "I am seriously perturbed by this flagrant breach of obligations voluntarily accepted under the I. C. and A Act by you and your officers or behalf of your members "1 have indicated to employers and trade unions alike that the Government will not stand idly by and see the law of the land brought into contempt. "If your members consider the employers have in any way breached the terms of the award under which they are work ng there is a proper course open which you on their behalf have undertaker to follow. "I appeal to workers to resume immediately otherwise the Government will not hesitate to take appropriate action to avoid serious disruption to economv which will inevitably result if you persist in your present tactics.”
