I.M.F.
Sir, —Driven into a corner, Mr Hiram Hunter takes refuge in such abstract nonsense as “sovereigpty.” British imperialists took over New Zealand’s sovereignty long ago. Our sovereignty, along with our sovereigns, commenced to fade with New Zealand’s participation of the South African war. Now’ we have lost South Africa, too. The question is not whether New Zealand should, or should not. join up with the World Bank. but W’hen. Slowly, economic and political pressures, plus two world wars, are pushing States together. At the moment, all I can say is that New Zealand. like Western Europe, is at sixes and sevens. Just as Britain will be remorselessly compelled to join the European Economic Community so will New Zealand be compelled to join the I.M.F.—Yours, etc.. RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, May 24, 1961.
Sir, —Mr Holyoake says we will not have a referendum on joining the World Bank. Apart from vested interests, very few’ people want to join. Oh. for another Abraham Lincoln, and down with dictators.—Yours, etc.. HEIL HITLER! May 25, 1961.
