WAITING LIST FOR ’PHONES
Work Planned In City Areas Extension of telephone services in the Beckenham and Fendalton exchange areas is planned to reduce the waiting list of telephone subscribers. the Postmaster-Gen-eral (Mr Hayman) has advised the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly). Mr Connelly’s electorate includes five telephone exchanges. The work in train or planned for three of them —the central exchange, Riccarton and Islington—has been announced already. In Fendalton, the exchange will soon be operating to capacity and it will not be possible to connect more than half the 502 applicants waiting, the Minister says. An extension of 1000 lines will be brought into use in 1963. The Beckenham exchange will be operating to capacity within a few weeks, the Minister says. A 1200-line extension to the switching equip- ■ ment is in hand, and 1000 lines will be brought into service towards the end of the year. The remaining 200 ' will be put in use in 1963. All the 809 applicants on ; the waiting list will be given ' service late this year or 1 early in 1962, the Minister adds. i • i , ■ :
