RACING Navarro To Go To Australia In July

Navarro has started on his early preparation for the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups this year.

One of the staying finds of autumn racing, Navarro will be taken to Australia with his stablemate Waverley in July.

They are both trained at Riccarton by I. McClure, who will establish his headquarters at Flemington when he gets to Melbourne. I Preliminary plans for an Australian campaign for Navarro were announced after he won the Great Autumn Handicap brilliantly at Riccarton at Easter. Since then the two-year-old Waverley has made an impressive winning debut at Ashburton, and it has been decided to take him to AusI tra’.ia with Navarro. Navarro is owned bv Mr and Mrs E. Rutherford, of Christchurch, and Waverlev is raced by Mrs J. W. Woodhouse. Navarro, now four, has raced only 10 times and has won five races. But there were fears that his career was over after he had had only five races. Since he resumed racing he has had five starts for four wins. He won these four races between February 4 and Anril 3, and they were worth £2795. of his' total earnings of £3215. The first of these wins was the Halswe’l Ha<*k Handicap at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting.

Then he was taken to Trentham for the Wellington autumn meeting where he won the Silverstream and Champion Hack Handicaps.

The Great Autumn has been his only race in open company.

McClure does not plan to race Navarro and Waverley

again before he leaves for Australia on July 21. Waverley is a chestnut gelding by Isaac of York from the Bal'.och mare Infanta. He could have hardly been more impressive in winning the Lauriston Two-Year-Old Handicap at Ashburton last week: he was slowest away yet won by two lengths.
