SPEAKER AND CAUCUS

Mr Algie Stays Away (N'Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 25. The Speaker-designate of the House of Representatives (Mr R. M. Algie) has decided not to attend Parliamentary National Party caucuses while he is Speaker. He did not attend a two-day caucus which opened today. “Mr Algie has decided to do this in line with the practice of establishing the independence of the Speaker,” the Prime Minister (Mr Holy. oake) told reporters after the Caucus adjourned for lunch. The Speaker in the former National Government, Sir Matthew Oram, did not attend party caucuses. The Labour speaker (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) attended caucuses while he was Speaker.
