Alabama Officials

(ft Z Press Assn.— Copyright) WASHINGTON. May 24 The United States Government moved today against four police officials in Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama, on the grounds that they failed to assure protection for the “freedom riders'* when they first arrived in the State. The Justice Department asked the United States District Court at Montgomery to enjoin the officials from “interfering with the peaceful movement of inter-State travel.” The action would make the four defendants in a Government complaint already outstanding against the Ku Klux Klan and certain States’ rights groups. The Birmingham officials are the Police Commissioner. Eugene Connor, and the Police Chief. Jamie Moore. The Montgomery officials are the Commissioner of Public Works, Lester Sullivan, and the Police Chief, Goodwin Ruppenthal.

Japanese Trade Mission To N.Z.

(N Z.P A -Reuter-Copyright) TOKYO. May 25. The Japanese Machinery Exporters’ Association will send a six-man survey mission to Australia and New Zealand from July 5, it was announced last night. The mission is scheduled to - meet Australian and New e Zealand importers to hold a talks on Japan’s exports of g light machinery. e The survey is expected to last about four to five days.
