PROMISING ’CHASERS

Masefield And Gay Mood

"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, May 23. Masefield and Gay Mood showed promise of developing into competent cross-country runners when they schooled in a pleasing manner at Wingatui this morning.

Gay Mood (B. N. Blair) was the more impressive, but there was little between them over a round of six steeplechase fences at a sound pace.

Masefield was ridden by R. W. Crowe, who will have the mount on the Royal Chief gelding in the Studholme Steeplechase at Waimate on Saturday. A last-start winner over hurdles at Ashburton, Gay Mood may be seen over the bigger fences at the Dunedin meeting next month. Cornflake (R. A. Low) and Mlaster David (M. Blair) did not impress in their school over a round of hurdles. They are candidates for the Waihao Hack Hurdles. Master David is also in the Waimate Cup and he -may start in this event if scratchings allow him to re-enter the field.

TTie track was sodden after recent rain and there was little fast work of a serious nature. The gallops were held 20 feet out on the trial grass.

Tarmine (J. R. Dowling) and Captain Morgan (B. E. Kennedy) drew away from Mighty Son (R. A. Low) at the end of three furlongs in 45sec.

Mighty Son has given his owner-trainer, J. B. Brown, some concern since he returned from the MarlboroughNelson circuit, where he won the President's Handicap at Blenheim.

Begorrah (B. E. Kennedy) was not out for time when he worked over half a mile in 58sec, the first furlong in 14sec.

Persian Light (R. Crowe) and Royal News (R. J. Skelton) went over the same ground in 57sec. the opening furlong in 13 2-ssec. Half Quid (R. J. Skelton) was more impressive than Modern Fair (J. R. Dowling) over five furlongs in Imin 10 sec, the first two furldngs in 26sec.
