“No Plans In U.S.”
(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright! WASHINGTON. May 22
The United States Mercury astronaut programme as operated at present was strictly for men only, the United States Space Agency said today. The agency declined to speculate as to when its space projects might include women. “We have no lady astronauts in training or scheduled for training.” a spokesman for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said. “We are not supporting research on female space crews at this time.”
The organisation made its position clear in response to queries following a statement by its administrator (Mr James Webb) on a television programme yesterday that Dr. W. Randolph Lovelace. of New Mexico, had started giving a group of ■women pilots tests similar to those used in the selection of the seven Mercury astronauts.
