Magistrate’s Court Soldier Admits Theft On Inter-Island Steamer
Because it was going to be Scold on field exercises at the iWaiouru Military Camp and i because his fellow soldiers I dared him to. a 21-year-old 'soldier stole a bath mat and ;a blanket, the property of [the Union Steam Ship Company. from the intcr-island steamer on March 23, Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. was told in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Stanton Mac Kay, a private in the Ist New Zealand Regiment, pleaded guilty to stealing the articles, valued at £3 Is 4d. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. An order for restitution of the property was made.
Sergeant V. F. Townshend said that when the accused’s kit bag was inspected at Waiouru the articles with the brand of the Union Steam Ship Company on them were found. Mac Kay had no previous convictions, he said. One of the accused’s senior officers told the Court that there had been some drinking on the ship and that might have played some part in the offence. He described Mac Kay as a first-class soldier, SLEPT AT RAILWAY STATION
After a complaint to the police at 5.20 am. yesterday a visit was made to the Christchurch Railway Station and two men were found asleep against hot-water pipes near the men’s conveniences, said Sergeant Townshend. The two men. Jack Manu Williams, aged 21, a workman, and Stephen James Grant, aged 19, a workman, were each fined £3 for being unlawfully on enclosed premises. They pleaded guilty.
REMANDED Basil Joseph Murphy, aged 18, a baker, was remanded on bail until Thursday on a charge of breaking and entering and also one of car conversion on May 6 Murphy's counsel, Mr G. T. Mahon, said that he was arrested last Friday and appeared before Justices of the Peace on Saturday morning. On that occasion bail was not asked for. he said. SPEEDING
When stopped by Traffic Officer J. Pickett in Pages road on January 29 after having been checked by the officer as travelling at 50 miles an hour, Neville Gwynne Larson said .that he had just decided "to give the machine a burst in third gear.” said Chief Patrol Officer J. Brown.
Larson, who pleaded guilty to exceeding 30 miles an hour, was fined £4. On a charge of exceeding 30 miles an hour when not wearing a safety helmet, to which he also pleaded guilty, he was fined £2.
When stopped in Pages road on February 28 after haying been checked at doing 68 miles an hour, Robin Edward Thompson admitted it was a stupid thing to do. said Chief Patrol Officer Brown. Warning the defendant that if he appeared before the Court again for speeding his licence would be dealt with, the Magistrate fined Thompson £6.
