Three-Year-Olds’ Southland Wins

"Tne Press'' Special Service

INVERCARGILL, May 22.

Three three-year-olds— Tampa, Kumai and Filwood—were winners on the second day of the Southland Racing Club's winter meeting on Saturday. AU three handled the heavy track In competent style and ran oat their races well enough to indicate winning chances over further ground.

Tampa, a Callander filly from Bonny Baffles, has now won at her last two starts for her Gore owner, Mr S. J C. Breen, who trains and bred her.

Tampa beat a field of hack sprinters in the Te Tua Handicap with something to spare after being one of the leaders over the last three furlongs. She ran on solidly to beat the first-day winner Laura and there is little doubt she could win again under similar conditions. By Callander, which was sold to the North Island where he died shortly after, Tampa is out of Bonnie Baffles, by Baffles, whose stock were out-and-out mudlarks.

Bonnie Baffles was out of Bonnie Diamond, a half-sister by Woodend to a New Zealand Cup winner and fine stayer in Royal Lancer and was closely related to another capable galloper in Suphero, winner of the Invercargill Cup. Kumai. which had been placed against the hack sprinters the first day. was too good for the hack milers on Saturday and won as he like! after being one of the leaders from the half-mile One of Mr T. K S. Sidey’s team trained at Wingatui by D. P. Wilson, is by Kurdistan. whose stock have been most successful this term. Soumai, the dam of Kumai. was also raced by Mr Sidey and Kumai is her first foal. She was sired by Golden Souvenir from Beaumai. by Beau Repaire from Manuia, by Musketoon. Filwood rounded off a string of placings with a runaway success in the Novice Stakes, in which he gave the leaders a good start from the half-mile but was in front a furlong out and then won as he liked. He is raced by Mr W G. Jefferies, who also purchased Antarctic Flight and Loyal Flight at

the dispersal of Mr D. M. Tweedie's racing stock. Filwood was bought at the National Yearling Sales for 650gns and is a good-looking Red Mars three-year-old from Madam Furst, by Lambourn from Lady Furst, a fine race mare which won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap and was a half-sister to the capable galloper Agog.

Filwood is a half-brother to a winner in Selfurst and a member of the same family as First Over, Watch Officer and others. He is trained at Gore by R. J. Cochrane.

There was some excuse for Shootalong's failure in the Orepuki Steeplechase. in which he arrived on the final scene with a late run for second to Arctic Star. Shootalong got down in his float on the w r ay to the meeting and lest a good amount of skin. His connexions were anxious to withdraw him but he was given a veterinary clearance and took his place in the field. By the time he got warmed up to his work the race was as good as over. Shootalong's injuries were mostly superficial and he is expected to be on hand at the Dunedin meeting next month.
