TUTOR FOR WEST COAST
Adult Education Appointment
The new resident West Coast tutor for the ‘ Adult Education Department of the University of Canterbury will be Mr Barry Williams, who has recently returned to New Zealand after two years in Britain. Mr Williams, who was born in Palmerston North, attended Nelson College and then took a bachelor of music degree at the University of Canterbury. He re'urned to teach at Nelson College for three years. During this period he took an active part in training musical groups in outlying areas for the Nelson Provincial Choirs’ Association. At this time also, Mr Williams took a bachelor of arts degree
(largely extra-murally) from Victoria University of Wellington. In 1959 Mr Williams went overseas for further experience and taught mostly in London schools. At present he is on a short familiarisation course at the Christchurch office of the Adult Education Department before going to Greymouth at the end of the month. The resident West Coast adult education tutor has responsibility for general supervision of courses in music, art, drama, languages, international affairs and many other topics, although special schools are held from time to time by specialist tutors from Christchurch. Another important feature of the work is assistance to existing voluntary organisations and promotion of new ones.
