Obituary MR D. M. ANDERSON
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. May 22. Mr Donald McDougal Anderson, who collapsed and died at a New Plymouth bus depot on Sunday, was a distinguished literature scholar and was lecturer in English at Palmerston North University College.
Mr Anderson’s academic feats were all the more noteworthy because he was a spastic.
While a student at Otago University. Mr Anderson gained the Knox Fellowship in 1951. He travelled to England and took the degree of bachelor of literature at Oxford.
After teaching in Britain for a period he returned to New Zealand to take up a lecturing post at the Palmerston North University College. which opened last year. While at Otago University. Mr Anderson was a prominent literary critic and a contributor to “Landfall.” the "New Zealand Listener,” and numerous daily newspapers.
Mr Anderson, who was 38. is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Margaret Witts, whom he met at Oxford.
