NATIONAL ROADS BOARD HAS INCREASED INCOME

WELLINGTON, May 19. The income of the National Roads Board increased by £636,264 during the year ended March 31, 1961. Total income for the year was £22.649.432, compared with £22,023.168 for the year ended March 31, 1960. These figures were tabled at a meeting of the board in Wellington. But in spite of the increase in receipts the total sum available in the National Roads Fund for the year ending March 31. 1961. dropped by £235.677 compared with the previous year. This was because the balance of £1,480.511 carried forward as at April 1, 1960. was £871.941 less than that carried forward as at April 1, 1959.
Gross revenue for the year ending March 31, 1961. from petrol tax was £18.583,011. an increase of £936.662 on the previous year when the total revenue was £17.646,349. Net petrol tax receipts for the year were £15.735.181
compared with £15,239,104 for the previous year. Net mileage tax during the vear was £499.599 compared with £388,743 for the previous year, and tyre tax totalled £43,677, compared with £38,466, Income from registration licence fees for the year also increased, being £2,416,364. compared with £2.309.906 for the previous year. Heavy traffic fees amounted to £2.614.031. compared with £2.486.039 for the previous year. Contributions to the Roads Fund from the Consolidated Fund for the year were £1.000.000, compared with £1.200,000 for the previous year. The principal items of expenditure for the year with the previous year’s figure in parentheses were— State highways maintenance. £4.117.590 (£3.765.586). State highways construction. £8,302,105 (£7.523.175).
Subsidies to local bodies, £9.748.850 (£10.469.740). Administration. etc.. £1.093,930 (£1,035,553).
