TROTTING JOHNNY DEAN PICKED TO WIN

Washdyke Sprint Race Today

Johnny Dean, a good sixth over 13 furlongs in the race won by Medoro Star at Forbury Park a fortnight ago, is selected to win the Farewell Handicap, a sprint race at the Timaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Washdyke today. Johnny Dean looked unlucky at his last start. He was handy early, only to be pushed well towards the rear of the field in the middle stages. He was never in a challenging position afterwards and did well to finish sixth.

On the first night at Forbury Park. Johnny Dean showed something of his true form when he beat all but the highly-rated Cardigan Bay in a fast-run race. If he reproduces that effort, he should be too good for most tn this field.

Meadow Scott paced two useful races at Forbury Park where he had little in his favour. He was most impressive at Thursday’s trials and if be can handle the track conditions, he should extend Johnny Dean. Falsehood will attempt to

give away starts of 24 yards in a big field. He is one of the speediest pacers in his class, but is not always reliable. If he begins cleanly he could be in at the finish He will be bracketed with Ballista, which has been out of form in recent months. Betharry will have his first start since joining J. M. Faru clipped a sulky wheel and broke, losing all chance at Forbury Park. His previous form was of a high standard in Southland. He will be meeting sterner opposition here, but could be a threat.

Lauder Scott finished a sound seventh from 48 yards over two miles at Oamaru. He looks more favourably placed on the limit in this field and could be prominent. Won At Forbury Leslie Grattan was a sprint winner at Forbury Park. He was a fair sixth over two miles after starting from 48 yards at Oamaru last week. He will be racing on his home track and is assured of solid support. Tryst gave away starts of up to 24 yards when she won a sprint at Methven last month. She is a useful sprinter and should be capable of a bold showing in spite of her handicap of 24 yards. Young Kim. Oreti, and Calumite are others capable of adding interest to the finish. Graeme Scott won so convincingly at Oamaru last Saturday that he should go close to repeating that effort in the Stewards’ Handicap, which will be run over 14 furlongs. If he is allowed to make his own rules in front, he will take beating. Our Own will be making a fresh start. She was a little disappointing at the Addington trials on Thursday, but should be improved as a result of the run.

Bandsaw has been second in her last two starts and is overdue for a win. She seldom trots a bad race and must, be respected. Catapult, Fallacious and Warwick Peter look the pick of the remainder. The T.A.B. double will be run on the President’s and the May Handicap. Guiness and Whipaway forming a likely combination.

Regina Chief and Robyn are selected to win the oncourse double, which will be run on the First Caroline and the Second Caroline Handicaps. There has been good drying in Timaru in the last two days, except for a shower on Thursday night, and the track has made a good recovery from the recent soaking it received. However, it will still be on the soft side. Favourable weather is forecast.
