PUERTO RICO TOURNEYS

Americans To Play

(N.Z.P.A .‘Reuter—Copyright) WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (West Virginia), May 18.

Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead intended to defend their title in the international golf championship and Canada Cup matches in Puerto Rico, on June 1 to June 4, in spite of claims on their services by sponsors of the Memphis open on the same date. United Press International reported today.

On his arrival in White Sulphur Springs today to play in the Sam Snead festival tourney, Palmer said that he had ’’made no pledge at any time to play in Memphis. “I never intended to play there,” he said. ”1 think I owe it to the United States as a member of the defending championship team to play in the international.” The organisers of the Memphis tournament threatened to take action to penalise any players who failed to observe a contract with the Professional Golf Association to play in the Memphis open at the same time as the Canada Cup was held. The main players affected were Palmer, Gary Player (South Africa) and Stan Leonard (Canada).
