TROOPS FOR THAILAND
“No Approach To N.Z.”
(NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 18. New Zealand had not been consulted about a reported United States proposal for troops from the eight S.EA.T.O. Nations to be stationed in Thailand, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight. “No official approach has been made to us and the matter has not been considered here,” Mr Holyoake added. He was answering questions at a press conference. New Zealand is one of the eight members of the S.E.A.T.O. alliance. Thais "Cool” The United States VicePresident (Mr Lyndon Johnson) is reported to have made the proposal to the Thai Premier (Marshal Sarit Thanarat) during his visit to Bangkok this week. Marshal Sarit was reported to be “cold” about the plan. The proposal was first reported in an American weekly news magazine last week. The United States is reported to have put forward the idea of a S E.A.T.O. force in. Thailand to allay Thai fears about the possible loss of Laos to left-wing forces and the success of rebel forces in neighbouring South Vietnam
