STRIKES IN PARIS
Transport Chaos
IN Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, May 19
Paris, brought virtually to a standstill yesterday by transport and power strikes will be hit by an airline strike tomorrow. Ground staff of France’s national airline, Air France, have decided to stop work for one hour from mid-day, threatening complete dislocation of French and foreign airline flights. More than 1,000.000 civil servants and schoolteachers have also decided in principle on a 24hour stoppage in the near future.
Yesterday's strikes threw the city into chaos as transport workers began a 32-hour walk-out, and gas and electricity employees struck for four hours over pay claims. Those with cars drove to work. There were no buses or suburban trains. When the power cut switched off traffic lights, some of the worst traffic jams in Paris’s history resulted. The strikers were protesting against a Governmentimposed ceiling designed to control inflation.
