Three Challenges To Woman Juror
Many are called, but few are chosen may have been the thought of Mrs Ruth Sylvia Wilks, a housewife, during the .sittings of the Supreme Court at Christchurch this week.
Mrs Wilks was the only woman in the 45 jurors called for service at the Criminal sessions this week. Four trials were heard. Mrs Wilks was not called for the first jury empanelled, but lief name was drawn out of the ballot box by the Court Registrar (Mr J. L. W. Gerken) in each of the succeeding three trials.
| However, Mrs Wilks was challenged successively by defence counsel—Mr B. J. Drake, Mr D. H. Godfrey, and Mr R. G. Blunt. i Mrs Wilks is the first i woman juror to be called during the empanelling of a jury in the Supreme Court since Mrs Helen Garrett two years ago became the first woman jury foreman in New Zealand.
