EDUCATION BUILDING
Allocation Of £8.7 m
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, May 18. A provisional allocation by the Government of £8,750.000 for the 1961-82 education building programme was announced by the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) tonight. “This large sum will," he said, “ensure that the present scale of provision of essential education buildings is maintained.” The programme, besides providing for extensions to existing schools and universities, included provision for 45 new primary schools, a number of intermediate schools and post-primary schools, and a new teachers’ college at Hamilton. The total value of the work, spread over several financial years, included in the programme was £29m. ‘This figure will give some idea of the size of the task facing us," said Mr Tennent The constantly-expanding school population must be provided for. and the everincreasing number of students seeking higher education would need greatly-expanded accommodation at the universities. Full details of the individual works provided for would be given as they were approved. In the meantime education boards were being authorised to proceed on the usual basis with their building programmes.
