COLLECTION OF REFUSE

Contract System In Two Areas

A tender of 4d a collection for the New Brighton area and 5d for Mount Pleasant was accepted by the City Council on Wednesday for the contract collection of refuse. The cost would be about £126 a week, the works committee said. The cost of refuse collection in the areas now averaged £llB a week, but because of the present difficult labour position, the committee recommended collection by contract. One of the seven tenderers offered a service with whitecoated collectors and regu-larly-cleaned trucks, but the committee said that as the cost was more than double that of the lowest tender and also higher than the estimated cost of a "dustless" back-door collection, it could not be considered.
