Noxious Weeds
Sir.—l am very pleased to see that the Halswell, Malvern. Springs. Paparua. and Ellesmere-Selwyn counties are'contemplating a tougher policy on control of noxious weeds. I hope Ashburton county follows suit. I would like to draw Mr Jenkins's attention to Section 11. 12. and 13 of the Noxious Weeds Act. Section II was incorporated in the act to prevent the spread qf noxious weeds through the sale of hay infested with weeds. Section 12 to prevent spread by grass seed, and Section 13 to prevent spread through harvesting machines. So obviously further legislation is unnecessary. The farmer referred to by Mr Voice would get very short shrift in this area, if I knew anything about the local inspector. Through people like this, the hillcountry farmer who has an oversowing programme under way. could find himself in a real mess. The same applies to farmers who buy hay from these areas.—Yours, etc. POSTERITY. May 17, 1961.
