Man Escapes Unhurt

(N Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 18. The head of an Auckland excavating firm was trapped up to his waist in clay at 10 azn. today when the 10ft deep trench he was working in at Birkdale caved in. The man, Lawrence Gordon McKenzie, aged 41, of Papatoetoe. was taken to the North Shore Hospital, and treated for shock, then taken home. Mr McKenzie was saved from further falls of clay by a mechanical excavator, which was at the top of the trench, and held back much of the falling clay. The fall pinned his legs to an 18in sewer pipe, but he said that at no time did he feel himse!’* to be Ln anv danger. His two sons. Garrv, aged 21, and Bob, aged 14, supported him while three workmen dug him out with shovels.
