ELECTRONIC BETTING

New Method Invented

(tt.Z. Press Assn.-*-Cofn/right) SYDNEY, May 18. Off-course bets, made only five minutes before a race, could be chanelled to a central office in time for the event, using a new method of electronic off-course betting, according to a Sydney turf writer.

The method, invented by a Sydney man, is expensive, and manufacture and installation of the equipment could cost up to £2 million Under the present system of off-course betting in Victoria, bets have to be made at least 40 minutes before a race. With the Sydney invention. bets would be typed into an "electric memory” at country offices, then relayed electronically to Sydney. The writer said channelling of the bets could be done in a few seconds. The Sydney inventor had tested one of his machines at Randwick racecourse. He channelled bets from various parts of the course to the central operating point.

The machine worked splendidly and the inventor is confident it will work just as efficiently over long distances.
