(HZ Reuter—CopyrigM)
PARIS, May 17. R. K. Wilson, tbe only British man to receive seeding status in the French tennis championships, began his challenge today by toppling the formidable Argentinian giant, E. Morea, in a sparkling centre-court performance. The 25-year-dld Wilson, seeded eighth, won 6-4, 6-2. 6-2 The ease and fluency of Wilson’s virile game presented a sharp contrast to the play of Morea, who vainly tried to recapture the fine form which he had shown last week in Turin. Sangster gained a creditable second-round win over Venezuelan left-hander, I Pimental, 6-3. 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Britain’s A. Pickard proved no match for the Parts idol, P. Darmon, who won 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. Miss C. Truman defeated Miss M. Bourbonnais • France), 6-2, 6-4, and Miss A. Haydon beat the Australian, Miss M. Hellyer, 6-3, 6-2. OtWay’s Defeat A Sydney youth, M. Mulligan, defeated New Zealand’s number two, M A Otway, after a two-hour tenminute battle of smashes, volleys, and agonisingly drawn-out match points. The score was 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 Mulligan won mostly by forcing Otway away from the net and allowing him nc opportunity to use his overhead smash. Whenever he failed to do this Otway scored freely. Otway, on the other hand, did his best to lure Mulligan into lobbing. Whenever Mulligan fell for it, Otway punished him severely. , The last game of the second set was typical. It was advantage Otway, deuce. Then advantage Mulligan, deuce again. Otway deuce, advantage Mulligan, deuce, advantage Otway, deuce, advantage Mulligan. Then tn a moment of dramatic tension. Mulligan took the game In the final set, Otway storjned to a 4-0 lead with lobs, volleys and advantage after advantage as Mulligan let him take over at the net. Mistakes Told Mulligan served two double faults in succession, and a cry of glee rang out from Otway. But inexplicably Otway began to make mistakes The score crept up through
his own errors and Mulligan began to regain confidence. Otway battled to overcome his slips. There were three match points. But Otway won only one more game, while Mulligan kept scoring and won 7-5.
