ORCHESTRAL COURSE

Public Concert At Conclusion

A concert to which the public are invited will end the holiday orchestral course for post-primary school pupils being held at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. About 70 are attending the course, which is under the direction of Mr W. H. Walden-Mills, adviser in school music to the Education Department. He is assisted by Mr R Perks, lecturer in music at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. The course began on Monday. The day’s programme for the course has been a full orchestral practice for the first period in the morning and later practice in the instrumental sections. In the afternoon there has been another full orchestral practice. Christchurch teachers are instructing the instrumental groups. Mr Walden-Mills said that the course was meant to be a stepping-stone to the National Youth Orchestra. There will be more than 80 performers in the concert, which is to be held tomorrow at 10.30 a.m. in the main hall of the college. Michelle Brunsden, of Hastings, is the leader of the orchestra. The Christchurch string quartet which was placed second in the Wellington competitions will also play. Mr Walden-Mills said he expected the standard to be quite high.
