Classics Seminar At University
“The Augustan Age” is the title of a seminar organised by the departments of classics and adult education of the University of Canterbury, which began yesterday. Yesterday morning Mr G. V. Summer gave an address on the historical background of the Augustan age. Augustan attitudes to life and particularly stoicism and epicureanism in the work of the Augustan poets was discussed by Mr D. D. McGibbon in the afternoon. Las' evening Miss M. K. Steven talked about Roman art in the time of Augustus. The relationship between Horace and classicism will be discussed by Mr N. H. Bindley this morning and this afternoon Professor D. A. Kidd will speak on Virgil and the meaning of life. Discussion periods were held yesterday and will be held today. The seminar will end today.
