(N.Z.P. A.~Reiiter—~Copyright) KATMANDU, May 18 An assault group of Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan expedition set out today on the last stage of an attempt to climb 27.790-foot Mount Makalu. the world’s fifth highest mountain.

Sir Edmund Hillary, convalescing at 14,000 feet after a mild stroke last Sunday, was reported to be directing final operations by radio. ■ Dr. Michael Ward, a London surgeon, has taken over the leadership of the expedition.

The assault party was delayed yesterday by snow and blizzards. Supporting teams stood by in a camp at a height of 24.500 feet to. make a second attempt to reach the summit if the first party failed.
