MR J. MOFFETT’S DEATH
Prime Minister Pays Tribute
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 17.
By the death of Mr John Moffett, New Zealand had lost a widely-respected newspaper editor, under whose leadership the "Otago Daily Times” had maintained a reputation for vigorous and forthright journalism, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) today. His death was a great loss to journalism and to the public he served so well, Mr Holyoake said. Through the High Commissioner in London, he had sent the following message to Mrs Moffett: “Please convey to Mrs Moffett my deepest sympathy in her bereavement. The late Mr Moffett was held in the highest respect as an outstanding journalist, who upheld the best traditions of his craft, and as a publicspirited citizen.” Close Personal Friend "Over the years I had come to regard him as a close personal friend.” said Mr Holyoake, "and I deeply regret his passing, and the loss of a man who contributed so much to the cultural and civic progress of the day.” The Mayor of Dunedin (Mr T. K. S. Sidey) said he felt sure citizens were shocked to learn of the untimely death of Mr Moffett. All would deeply regret his sudden passing.
“He was very highlyrespected in the field of journalism,” said Mr Sidey. "Those of us who had any dealings with him personally always found him very courteous, sympathetic, and helpful. Our sympathies go out to his widow and family.”
