CARLTON MILL CORNER

Discussion On Laning

With some minor alterations to the present system of laning at the Carlton Mill corner, it was thought that the movement of traffic could be improved, and the changes had been authorised, the traffic committee reported to the City Council last evening. It was commenting on a letter from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce which proposed a roundabout at the intersection. The council had agreed to the laning of the corner and the installation of traffic lights, but finance for the project was diverted to enable more urgent work to be done at Wilsons road. Ferry road and Moorhouse avenue and at the hospital corner, the committee said. The painted directional lines and signals had resulted in some improvement, although difficulties were still experienced at certain times. A recent survey during the peak half-hour in the evening showed that the average delay to each vehicle was: Bealey avenue, three seconds; Park terrace, 14 seconds: Harper avenue. 25 seconds.

“We should not be painting any more lines,” said Cr. G. D. Griffiths. “We should put this on *he estimates for a roundabout and get on with it right away." If a roundabout would solve the problem, It would be very easy for the City Engineer and his experts to say so. said Cr. H. P. Smith. But they were not satisfied that a roundabout would meet the difficulties. Lights were planned for the intersection. but it was third on the priority list. An amendment that the report be referred back to the committee to consider a temporary roundabout was lost by 10 votes to seven.
