SHIPPING DELAYS
Mr Holyoake’s Comment (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 17. A special Government subcommittee had already met the Harbour Boards’ Association on the question of delays to overseas shipping at New Zealand ports and further meetings had been arranged, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) confirmed today. But he said he knew nothing of an application to increase shipping rates. Mr Holyoake said the basic reason for the port delays was the unjustifiable increase in import licences granted some nine months ago, and the consequent arrival of such heavy cargoes of imports. “That is the major immediate contributory factor although I am not satisfied there is not a fundamental problem which needs to be tackled,” he said.
