The Northern Outlet
Sir, —Writing as a “man in I the street,’’ I find H. H. Pet-; rie’s letter interesting. Why j increase the bottleneck al-i ready created by two solid bridges and a frightening i build-up of shingle giving] Waimakariri floodwaters’ little get-away? Why notj join these two bridges.! without further use of py- i lons, to make a really good northern outlet here and build another bridge upstream opposite the Harewood road—if the river there is suitable —to take traffic in the Oxford direction as has been advocated? Regarding flooding of this river. Kaiapoi residents are not the only ones who need to: worry. I would like to see; soil-bearing flood waters spend themselves on tracts of light uninhabited flats—the wise idea of a pioneer.— Yours, etc.,
CATHERINE R. DIXON May 17, 1961.
