TAXIDRIVER ATTACKED

(N'.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 15.

A taxi-driver, Mr G. W Willis, aged 49, was beaten about the head with an unknown weapon by a passenger he picked up at 11 o’clock this evening. Mr Willis was admitted to the Green Lane Hospital, where his condition was reported as fairly satisfactory. Mr Willis picked up a man outside the Ellerslie Post Office shortly before 11 o’clock. The man asked to be taken to Penrose road. When the taxi drove along the road, the man began to hit Mr Willis on the head. Mr Willis stopped the car and grappled with his assailant, who then leapt out and started to run away. Mr Willis chased the man and caught hold of his jacket, but he dipped out of it and ran clear.
