Pears As Dollar Earners
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. May 11. New Zealand pears may become dollar earners after a successful trial shipment of 2000 cases to Montreal this year. The pears were shipped by the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board. Mr J. H. Parker, chairman of the board, said in Wellington today that a cabled report had just been received from the board's agent, to the effect that the fruit arrived in excellent condition, and was particularly well received by the trade. **
Prices realised were eight dollars a case for Packham's Triumph and seven dollars for Beurre Bose, which would represent C.I.F. prices of 42s and 35s respectively, said Mr Parker.
“These prices are very staisfactory. I hope that a worth-while market can be developed for pears in this area.” he said.
The trial shipment was arranged after a visit to Canada last year by Mr Parker and the board’s assistant general manager. Mr D. L. Waller. while en route to London.
