ANTARCTIC STORM

136 m.p.h. Wind At Wilkes (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA. May 8. A hurricane gusting up to 136 miles an hour blew away a new building at Australia’s Wilkes Antarctic station last Thursday. the External Affairs Department reported. The building was recently completed as a magazine for housing explosives. The officer in charge of the station. Captain N. Smethurst. told the department that the winds were the strongest’ ever experienced at Wilkes. The wind did not fall below 104 miles an hour at any stage of the storm. The magazine roof disappeared and the complete floor assembly was blown over a hill 400 yards away. A radio aerial mast, a glaciology mast, and some transmission lines were also carried away.
