CRICKET Australia Confident After Yorkshire Draw

(N.Z. Pres* Association—Copyright)

MANCHESTER, May 10

The Australian cricket team goes into its match with Lancashire today confident after its sound performance against Yorkshire yesterday.

The Yorkshire match was drawn after Australia had declared with three down for 256 and Yorkshire had made 149 for eight at the end of play. A century by N. O’Neill and some useful bowling was a morale-boosting effort and a badly needed one after so many days of play were spoiled by rain. To do so well against the champion county was a tonic to the Australians. But they will need to be at their top today, because Lancashire last season, was not far behind. Yorkshire in strength and finished second on the county table. The Lancashire strength lies mainly in its attack, which is headed by England's opening bowler B. Statham and the fast-medium bowler K. Higgs There is also a strong spin support. R. Barber and T. Greenhough are among the best spinners in England and they will be helped by the offspinner K. Howard. The Australian team will field some solid batsmen led by the test openers. R. Simpson and C. McDonald, followed by N. Harvey. O’Neill and P. Burge. The attack will mainly be A. Davidson. G. McKenzie and R. Gaunt. L. Kline will do most of the slow bowling. There will be much interest in the appearance of McKenzie, the youngster of the Australian side who because of rain has not yet played. Kline and the wicketkeeper B. Jarman will also be making first appearances They were chosen to play against Derbyshire but did not bat, bowl or field when rain washed out almost the entire match.
