FALSE ALARMS BY SEAMEN

“Captain’s Cabin Ablaze” (N.Z. Pross Association) AUCKLAND. May 10. Giving false fire alarms that “the captain’s cabin is ablaze” and that "there is a fire aft” cost two seamen fines of £2O each today. They are William Derek Harrison, aged 24. and Gordon Wyness, aged 37. both seamen in the Scottish Monarch. Pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court, Auckland, before Mr W. S. Spence, S.M.. they said they were intoxicated at the time of the incidents.

Mr Spence: You apparently were sober enough to dial the correct number for the fire brigade. Mr G. A. Dalow, police prosecutor, said a telephone call to the brigade at 7.57 on Monday night drew seven engines, two ambulances, two policemen and numerous firemen to the Scottish Monarch. The call said: "There’s a fire in the captain’s cabin.” But the firemen found no fire or the person who gave the call.

The firemen received another call two hours later about “a fire aft in the Scottish Monarch.” Somewhart suspicious, but just in case, the brigade sent five engines, but it was another false alarm.

Police investigated and the next day the two accused were interviewed and they admitted that they were responsible.
