The latest and most modern cable repair ship afloat, the 4000-ton Retriever, has completed its trials off Ireland and is moored at Surrey commercial docks before leaving for Southampton. The Retriever will be based in Fiji to help in laying the Pacific section of the Commonwealth telephone cable and to maintain this and other cables in the area.

With an operating range of 8000 miles, the ship carries 400 miles of deep sea cable.

It has air conditioned accommodation and a cabin for every officer. The 53 Spanish crew members live in double cabins and their amenities include a portable swimming pool.
