UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
Education Board Representation
The proposals of the University of Canterbury to alter the membership of its council and dispense with the Canterbury Education Board’s representative after his six months’ extension of service, is strongly opposed by the Canterbury School Committees’ Association. At its meeting last evening the association expressed displeasure at the proposal, and will ask the university council to reconsider the matter. .
The association recently wrote to the Minister of Education (Mr Tranent) in a similar vein, and his reply was before last night’s meeting. No specific proposal for the draft legislation had yet been put before him by the university, said Mr Tennent, and when they were, they would be carefully examined before being introduced to Parliament. He was sure there would be ample opportunity for interested bodies to make known their views
The association represented a big proportion of children who would go forward to the university, and it was time the authorities were strongly advised that it should have one representative on the university courcil. said Mr G Lake. “It belittles this association if we are not permitted to retain ere permanent representative.” The association's representative on the university council (Mr A. Greenwood) said not all universities in New Zealand were adopting similar changes in constitution—“they all have the right to draw up their own.” He said it was quite possible that the reconstituted council would co-opt someone who would be virtually an Education Board representative.
