WELLINGTON, May 10
The Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) said today that he was very pleased at the response to the recruiting drive for the New Zealand Battalion to serve in Malaya. “With close on 900 applications received, the number required to expand the battalion to the strength required for overseas service is now assured," he said.
Most of the applicants had been of very good standard. Mr Eyre said. Most were in their early twenties, though there were older men, including some who had previously served in Malaya. Mr Eyre said that several groups of recruits had already gone to Burnham Camp to join the battalion. This movement would continue during the next few weeks. Training at Burnham would be thorough and comprehensive. “This battalion will be about the best-trained Army unit ever to leave New Zealand,” Mr Eyre said.
