PLEDGE BY TUBMAN
White-Ruled Africans
(N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MONROVIA (Liberia), May 8. President Tubman of Liberia today pledged the independent African countries would “stand by” Africans in white-controlled countries. He was opening a conference of 21 African States which will discuss among other things which country to lead black Africa. President Tubman said: “Our brothers must know in unmistakeable terms we stand behind them and will not desert them.”
He was referring to the peoples of Angola, Mozambique, Algeria, South-West Africa, South Africa and other parts of the Continent, he said.
Two of Africa’s most prominent leaders, President Nasser and President Nkrumah, declined to attend the conference, as did the leaders of Guinea, Mali and Morocco. But the heads of State and delegates who are present represent more than twothirds of the population of independent Africa.
