SPOT CHECKS ON VEHICLES

Many Found To Be Faulty

Spot checks on motor vehicles by officers of the Transport Department in the week ending May 6 revealed many cars with faults. Of 325 motor vehicles examined, 18 had insufficient lights, eight had incorrectly adjusted lights, 16 had no tail lights, and three had miscellaneous faults. Ten of the drivers received traffic offence notices. Nine cars had no warrants of fitness. This compares with one found during checks the previous week. The officers also examined 352 tyres. Thirty-six were smooth, but none were dangerous. Among the 69 bicycles examined. 16 had no headlamps, 27 had no tail lights, and 11 had no rear red reflectors. “There will be no let up in the checks until they end on May 27,” said the chief traffic officer (Mr E. Wilson) yesterday.
