Indoor Basketball REBELS A WINS
Holy Trinity Impresses
With University on vacation, only two senior games were played when the women’s indoor basketball competitions were continued on Monday evening. The newly-promoted Holy Trinity team nearly caused a major upset when it held the more experienced Rebels A to a draw until the last few seconds of the match. Teachers’ College could offer little opposition to Rangiora, which wen easily. Rebels A v. Holy Trinity A In an exciting game, which Rebels A was lucky to win, Holy Trinity showed that it is well up to senior standard. Neither team had much success with its shots, especially in the second half. Rebels gained possession of the ball from the jump and used its centre, B. Pointon, to feed the ball around the zone. Holy Trinity played a very close zone defence with several players ready to intercept stray passes. The first goal was very slow in coming and a long shot by P. Jarvis took Holy TMnity into the lead. Good passing and cutting showed the gaps in the Rebel's defence, and S. Gallagher scored two more goals before H. Johnson netted for Rebels. A more settled Rebels combination found it easier to score, and with H. Johnson and C. Brown finding the ring Rebels took the lead 10-6 at half-time. A reorganised Rebels team could do little in the second half, and with P. Jarvis rebounding and passing well to B. Smith and S. Gallagher, Holy Trinity equalised at 12-all. Rebels defended desperately in the last few minptes of the game with Holy Trinity trying hard to score. Good rebounding by B. Rodgers gained possession for C. Ogilvie to sink a long shot just as the final whistle blew and Rebels took the game 14-12. Top Scorers.—Rebels: H. Johnson 6. C. Brown 4. Holy Trinity: S. Gallagher 4, B. Smith 4. Rangiora v. Teachers’ College A With many regular college players absent, Rangiora had little opposition in its game. College played gamely against superior opposition and fought until the final whistle. Long Sasses overhead allowed A. Meammon and L. Rollinson many interceptions. V. Fiddler, Rangiora, was in fine form under the basket and scored 16 of the team’s 28 points.
