UNIFORMS OF SCHOOLGIRLS
Views Of U.S. Field Scholar
Wearing uniforma in postprimary schools tends to reduce the pupils’ chance of being individuals. Girls, especially, allow their uniforms to become sloppy and in many cases, do not show as much care with their own street clothes These are the views of Miss Judith Wolff, an American Field Scholar, who visited Christchurch during the week-end. on a group tour of the South Island Miss Wolff, who comes from Connecticut. is staying at Bulls and is attending Rangitiki College at Marton. She is aged 16 She said that apart from school uniforms. New Zealand girls dressed very well. Miss Wolff has now seen most of New Zealand and considers it a wonderful country. She said that remembering and pronouncing Maori place names had given her some difficulty New Zealand names for foodstuffs and household anpliances which differ cons;derably from those used in the United States have also been a source of amusement to her. Miss Wolff’s sporting interests include swimming, basketball. ice-skating, and badminton. As a bobby she collects sailors’ hats but as yet has not added to her collection during her stay in New Zealand Jhe said she had hopes of doing so before she leaves in August. Methods of travelling to and from school by high school students surprised Miss Wolff. Bicycles, which were i used extensively by New I Zealanders in travelling to school, were seldom seen "back home.” she said.
