DEBUTANTE BALL

Seven debutantes were presented in Christchurch last evening at the annual ball of the Christchurch West High School’s combined Old Pupils’ Association, held in the Winter Garden. Wearing white gowns, and carrying posies tied with the school’s Old Girls’ Association colours, the debutantes made their curtsies to the president of the association (Mrs B. Ferrand). They were presented by Mrs R. Searle, who had also trained them for the ceremony. The debutantes were Misses Annette Barlass. Jill Barrett. Carol Davis, Lyndsey Kennard. Ngaire Marriner. Juliet Neame and Margaret Orme. Huge pedestal bowls of chrysanthemums and other autumn-tinted flowers decorated the Winter Garden for the occasion. A bronze and white floral replica of the school monogram stood in the ballroom. Specially invited guests included the school’s headmaster (Mr T. Richards) and Mrs Richards; the chairman of the school’s board of governors (Mr H. Peers) and Mrs Peers; Mr and Mrs B. Ferrand; Mr and Mrs J. Shanahan; Mr and Mrs A. C. Pitcaithly; and representattives from the following kindred associations: Ashburton High School, Avonside Girls’ High School, Christchurch Girls' High School, Nelson Girls’ College, Rangi-ruru College, Otago Girls’ High School. St Margaret’s College, Southland Girls’ High School, Timaru Girls’ High School. St. Andrew’s College, St. Bede's College, Papanui High School. Christchurch Boys’ High School Brocade Gown Mrs Ferrand chose a gown of dark green brocade, styled with a halter neckline and a full flared skirt. The wife of the headmaster. Mrs T Richards, chose a gown of cream satin patterned with pink roses. It featured a heart-shape neckline, scooped at the back, and a full skirt. The wife of the president of the Old Boys’ Association, Mrs M. Richards wore a short evening gown of pure silk, patterned with pink roses on a bronze-green background Unpressed pleats fell from he waistline, where two rosepink sashes tied at the back of the full skirt. The draped bodice featured a high neckline. Members of the ball committee were Mesdames B Ferrand and R Hughes. Misses H. Brown and R Quartermain. Messrs M Richards, R. Burness. R. G. Thomson and R. Hughes.
