National Dancing At Competitions

Twirling kilts and skirling pipes marked the opening of the national dancing section of the Christchurch Competitions Society’s forty-ninth annua! festival last evening in the Caledonian Hall. "It was a very successful day for the society, one of the best we have had for some years,” said the secretary (Mr O. H. Houison). "The ‘House Full’ signs were up for both day and evening performances. The public are really enjoying the varied programmes presented at the evening demonstration concerts.” Silver cups and trophies are on display in the upstairs foyer at the Civic Theatre. William Langford, the winner of the piano solo hi the 16 and under 18 years' group, gave a polished performance of the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in D Minor at the demonstration concert last evening. The antics of two circus clowns, Luarna Penwell and Roseanna Jackson, winners of the comedy dance duo, any age. were enjoyed by the large number of children in the audience. Judge's Comments "Both the standard of speech and the selections chosen by the entrants in this section have improved very much since I was here four years ago,” said Mrs Anita Oliver, judge of the speech and drama section. "I have found the boys are better than the girls in all grades. They are winning everything and today was the first time a girl was able to surpass them. “The dialogues this year, especially in the 12 to 14 years age group, are outstanding. Entrants in all sections are going to a tremendous amount of trouble with their characterisations. Their work shows evidence of very good teaching and there are many young people who should be invaluable tojuture repertory productions.” BEGG’S CONCERT HALL Instrumental Test.—Eight and years'.
