MUSICAL IN PRISON

‘Oklahoma’ At Mt, Crawford

(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 9. Prisoners at Mount Crawford gaol have been singing songs from “Oklahoma” since the successful production of the musical on Sunday night at the prison. The musical was produced by the Mount Crawford Playhouse, in association with Wesley Drama-Christi. It was the first musical produced inside a New Zealand prison. Fifteen prisoners and 15 visiting amateur actors staged the show before an audience of about 100. They had rehearsed every Sunday night for months, under the direction of Mrs A D. Priestley. The prisoners built the sets, made the costumes and printed the programme. “They want to do a Gilbert and Sullivan show now,” said Mrs Priestley.
