Traffic Congestion
Sir,—Last Saturday afternoon. the road coach in which we were, returning from Nelson became' embedded. somewhere about Amberley, in a long.queue of cars debouching on to the main road. From the front seat elevation of the coach we had a clear view of the road and traffic for a long way ahead, and it was noticeable that very little effort was being made by drivers in the queue to extricate themselves. Traffic in the opoosite direction was virtually nil and the road looked fully wide enough for safe manoeuvring. Then one realised that none of the drivers were pulling over to the left, possibly off the tarseal. sufficiently to give an overtaking car a clear run. In effect, either through lack of tar-seal or through want of co-operation on the part of individual drivers the whole width of the road was not being used.—Yours, etc, ILAM. May 8, 1961.
