COMPULSORY UNIONISM

Storemen’s And Packers’ Views

It appeared ludicrous that when the attention of all sections of the public was centred on the precarious economic situation facing the country, the Government should gamble with industrial harmony, said the secretary of the New Zealand Storemen and Packers’ and Warehouse Employees’ Industrial Association of Workers (Mr J. R. Laby) yesterday in a statement on compulsory unionism.

Mr Laby said that at the association’s recent conference in Dunedin, the policy of the Government in abolishing compulsory unionism had been carefully considered. “It was felt by the association that compulsory unionism has worked to the satisfaction of both the workers and employers of New Zealand over the last 25 years.

“The association has decided to give its fullest support to the New Zealand Federation of Labour on its declared policy on this question, and will not hesitate to request the assistance of the federation in protecting its membership should the Government pursue its declared aim.

“The Government has on numerous occasions declared that it Is proud of the record of industrial peace which has been achieved in New Zealand," said Mr Laby. “We affirm that compulsory unionism has played a vital part in this achievement.”
