Building Survey Shows Rapid City Growth

The rapid growth of Christchurch is shown in a survey of building compiled by the research division of the Canterbury Public Relations Office.

The survey deals with building in the City of Christchurch and seven neighbouring counties and boroughs in the last five years.

The total value of buildings in these areas in the last financial year was £12,350.019. This compares with £9.539.741 in the previous year, and £7,086,543 in 1957.

In the City of Christchurch, 449 buildings worth £6.384,081 were built last year, compared with 3592 worth £3,973.944 in 1957. Dwellings (on sections with a minimum of 24 perches) were valued at £3,497,023 last year, compared with £2.451,664 in 1957. The figures show a marked increase in residential, industrial and commercial buildings in neighbouring areas. Ha (swell In Halswell, 276 buildings worth £470,445 were built, compared with 76 worth £115,788 in 1957. Dwellings built last year (on sections with a minimum of 24 and 32 perches) were worth £437,152, compared with £115,788 in 1957. In the Borough of Riccarton last year, 124 buildings worth £204.073 were built. This compares with 132 worth £126.806 in 1957. Dwellings (on sections with a minimum of 24 perches) were worth £75.258 last year, compared with £29,112 in 1957. In the County of Waimairi. 2133 new buildings worth £3.669,556 were built, compared with 1111 worth £1,693,019 in 1957. New dwellings last year were worth £3,467,966. and industrial and commercial buildings £201.590. Residential sections have a minimum of 24 perches. The total number of buildings erected last year was 7927; 6826 were built in 1960. 6253 in 1959. 6182 in 1958. and 6115 in 1957.
