(N.Z. Press LAS VEGAS, May 7
Twenty-six top golfers have pretested to the United States Golf Association alleging favouritism in the association’s exemption of six overseas players from the first of the two qualifying rounds of this year's United States open. They also protested at the exempting of the top three money winners, as at May 23. from both qualifying rounds for the open. The national open will be played on June 15 to June 17 at Birmingham. Michigan. The letter of protest to the association’s executive secretary (Mr J. Dey) said: "‘Exemption of the top three money winners appears to be an attempt to make certain of the participation of Gary Player.” Player is the 1961 Masters champion and at present is at the head of the prize money list. He told American professionals yesterday that he was prepared to offer to qualify for the open.
“I realise I'm in the middle of this,” he said. The members however, refused Player's offer and the subject was dropped. Player signed the nrotest letter with the other 25 professionals.
